Are you wanting engagement photos straight out of a fairytale? The Filoli Gardens in San Mateo are just what you’re looking for! There are over 600 acres of gorgeous grounds to wander and take photos at.
The lighting for Shirley and Indy’s session was pure, sun-kissed magic. The Filoli Gardens were in full bloom at the beginning of summer. Each corner created the most beautiful and colorful backdrop.
Many couples choose Filoli Gardens for their engagement photos and return for their wedding in the same beautiful setting. The estate’s grand ballroom, cozy terraces, and lush gardens make it an unforgettable place for photos or to exchange vows and celebrate.
One of the biggest advantages of Filoli that its scenery is always changing throughout the year. As the spring progresses, springtime flowers take center stage and host you for a bright ambiance when you visit. When summer unfolds, you’ll notice the garden has fruit trees that provide fruit as well.
Do you need a photo permit?
According to the Filoli official website, “portrait photography for personal use is welcome, but commercial photography—such as images for advertising or promotional purposes—requires prior permission from Filoli.”
When shooting in a public place with other patrons who may be nearby, its always best for us to be mindful of our surroundings. This means being polite to others and not blocking public walkways for photos. This is why it’s important to consider if a location will be busy before shooting there.
Why Choose Filoli Gardens for Your Engagement Session?
Filoli Gardens offers a garden setting unlike any other. Here are five reasons why so many couples fall in love with this venue:
- Historic charm: The Filoli Historic House & Garden carries an old-world elegance that feels romantic during any time of year.
- Timeless Beauty: The garden changes with the seasons, so there are endless photo opportunities: spring blossoms to autumn marigolds.
- Perfect Light: Light is behind every gorgeous photo. Its open landscape creates the most flattering natural light for portrait photography.
- Different Settings: There’s something here for every taste. Filoli provides a perfect garden scene, rustic trails, and sun-drenched courtyards, all within one convenient location.
- Exclusive Feel: Despite being a public estate, Filoli sessions feel private and intimate due to the size of the property.
Where to Take Photos at Filoli Gardens
The estate is bustling with the most photogenic backdrops I’ve ever seen. We could have stopped every few minutes to take photos and soak in its beauty. We loved the rose garden for its array of colorful roses and the wisteria-covered archways nearby too.
My favorite location was actually near the pool. While you cannot take a dip in the water, there are some antique-inspired lounge chairs that we used as props for some of the most fun photos!
When Are the Filoli Gardens Least Crowded
Mondays-Thursdays are by far the best time to visit the Filoli Gardens if you want a peaceful, uninterrupted session. Weekends tend to get quite busy, so make time for a weekday morning or afternoon to give us more freedom to explore and capture your photos without crowds.
Schedule your engagement photos with me today and let’s frolic the garden together!
