I approach a surprise proposal like an engagement session but with more planning and excitement. Tanner contacted me because he was going to surprise his girlfriend Skylar and propose to her during their trip from Texas to Sedona. I am always thrilled to get proposal inquiries. The moment is so raw and full of emotion.
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Sedona
The discussions leading up to the big proposal day were many, and we finally landed on a location. We agreed to keep hiking to a minimum, and came up with an idea to do the proposal during holden hour, with a view of Cathedral Rock.
As your boots on the ground photographer and guide, I am always happy to share my recommendations on the best places to hike (and eat) in Sedona. As part of my proposal photography packages, I always include planning, coordination, and unlimited communication leading up to the big moment. The planning is just as important as the photography, in my opinion.
How the Surprise Proposal Happened
Tanner and I kept in touch for months leading up the proposal moment. We agreed on a short hike and told his then girlfriend, Skylar, that they’d go to dinner afterwards. He shared his location with me day of so I could keep track of their whereabouts.
I got the location ahead of them, and picked the perfect spot for Tanner to get down on one knee. I took a photo of the location and drew stick figurines on it so Tanner knew the perfect spot. I go over more of these details are in my Instagram reel, here.
Long story short, I pretended to be a wildlife photographer, and Skylar was non the wiser! I was able to capture the sweet proposal moment. After the two of them had a few moments just to themselves, I pulled them aside to have a couples session. The lighting was absolutely perfect. I loved every moment of this surprise proposal!
As you can see from the photos, Skylar was very very excited, and she said YES!!!
